AWS Fundamentals (awsfundamentals.com, cloudwatchbook.com, the go.awsfundamentals.com short links, the AWS Fundamentals newsletter, books and courses, and the AWS Fundamentals pages on social networks) is operated by Volpicella Alessandro & Schmidt Tobias GbR. This policy explains which personal data we process, why, and what rights you have under the GDPR.

The website is hosted on Amazon Web Services (Amazon Web Services EMEA SARL, Luxembourg) and delivered through Amazon CloudFront. When you visit a page, the servers process technical data such as your IP address, date and time, requested URL, referrer and user agent. We need this to deliver the site and keep it secure (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR). Logs are deleted automatically after a short retention period. AWS may process data in the USA; transfers are covered by the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual clauses.

We use PostHog (PostHog Inc., data stored in the EU) to understand how the site is used. PostHog processes the data on our behalf as a processor (Art. 28 GDPR). Requests are proxied through our own domain. Without your consent, PostHog runs in cookieless mode and only receives pseudonymous usage data. With your consent via the cookie banner, PostHog may set cookies to recognise returning visitors (Art. 6 (1) (a) GDPR, § 25 (1) TDDDG). You can withdraw your consent at any time via the cookie banner.

Only with that consent, and only after you subscribe to the newsletter or arrive from a link in one of our emails, we link your browsing session in PostHog to your email address.

To measure which content and campaigns lead to newsletter signups and sales, our servers send a few events to PostHog directly. This happens independently of the cookie banner:

• newsletter signup, through a form or through sign-in with Google or GitHub
• purchase of a book or course
• click on a link in one of our emails
• change of your email preferences, including unsubscribing

These events contain your email address as identifier, your first name if you gave it, your Kit subscriber ID, the page and the referrer you came from, UTM campaign parameters, and depending on the event the order details (product, price, order ID) or the email channels you chose. They do not contain payment data.

The legal basis is our legitimate interest in knowing which content and campaigns work (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR). You can object at any time by emailing us. When you unsubscribe from all our emails, we remove your email address, name and Kit subscriber ID from your PostHog profile; unsubscribes made on our preferences page take effect immediately, those made through the link in an email within one day. Events are deleted after 12 months. On request we delete your PostHog data completely.

When you open one of our go.awsfundamentals.com short links, our server counts the click and sends it to PostHog with the link, the referrer, your browser's user agent and your IP address, from which PostHog derives your approximate location. To count unique clicks without a cookie, we use a daily changing pseudonymous ID calculated from the date, your IP address and user agent. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in measuring how our links perform (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR).

When you subscribe to our newsletter, we process your email address and, if provided, your first name to send you the newsletter and occasional offers for our own products (Art. 6 (1) (a) GDPR). We use Kit (ConvertKit LLC, USA) to send emails and to measure opens and clicks. You can unsubscribe at any time via the link in every email. We delete your data once you unsubscribe, unless we are legally required to keep it. Signups and clicks in our emails are also recorded in PostHog, see Signup and Purchase Analytics.

Our signup forms are protected by Google reCAPTCHA (Google Ireland Limited) to prevent automated signups (Art. 6 (1) (f) GDPR). reCAPTCHA evaluates data such as your IP address and browser behaviour. The Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply.

Books and courses are sold through Lemon Squeezy (Lemon Squeezy LLC, USA), which acts as merchant of record and processes payment and billing data under its own privacy policy. We receive your name, email address and order details to deliver the product and provide support (Art. 6 (1) (b) GDPR). Invoice data is kept for the retention periods required by German commercial and tax law. Purchases are also recorded in PostHog, see Signup and Purchase Analytics.

If you email us, we process your message and contact details to answer your request (Art. 6 (1) (b) or (f) GDPR) and delete them when they are no longer needed.

We use the LinkedIn Community Management API to retrieve aggregated statistics for our own AWS Fundamentals LinkedIn Page (followers, page views, post impressions and engagement). This data is used only internally to evaluate our content. We do not use it to profile individual members, and we do not sell or share it. You have the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and to object to processing based on legitimate interests (Art. 15 to 21 GDPR).
